Fox Hat

2019 has been quickly passing by with no means of slowing down! I can’t believe we are already in the last week of March.
You know you live in Northern Utah when it finally reaches 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit, and your children say “Man! It’s getting hot outside!” Haha. Though we love homemade hot chocolate and cozying up together for movie nights, we are definitely looking forward to summer. I can’t wait to hit the trails or watch the kids run around outside while I relax in the sun with yarn in my hand. I love to crochet in summer just as much as I do in the winter. But I do have to admit that summer pulls me away and into the fun quite a bit more than winter does.

I’ve really enjoyed the time I have spent furthering my creativity by adding different supplies into my crochet patterns. Many of my patterns include yarn, fur, buttons and felt, just like this pattern does. If the felt isn’t your thing, you can easily crochet some triangles instead, but I personally love the contrast it gives to cute little critters.

With the ears, I wanted to do something a little differently and add multiple color schemes. My inspiration for the black-tipped ears comes from the red fox species. Now you may be saying “But weaving in ends SUCKS!” I get it! I do! But bare with me folks! The finished product with the color changes in the ears is worth it y’all. My inspiration from this came from the red fox species.

I am SO excited to share my newest design with my fellow creative friends. Say hello to my newest woodland animal pattern, The Crochet Fox Hat. Similar to many of my other patterns, you will find that this hat pattern includes 7 sizes from newborn, all the way up to adult. I include a detailed, written and photo tutorial for the hat base and fox embellishments, including a free PDF template of the felt triangles.

Pattern Pointers

Base
This is what the base of the hat should look like. You may have more or less rounds depending on what size is being made. For this example, I am using the toddler size.

Ears
After the cream triangles have been made, tie off and switch to orange yarn. Sc evenly all the way around the triangles, place 2 sc in bottom corners, but do NOT work in the last st at the top.
Tie off. Switch to black yarn. Place black sts in the last st at the top to create the black tipped fox ear.
Sl st into next st and tie off. This is what the ears should look like.
Sew the ears to the body. For placement, I like to place them towards the top of the hat but down just a slight bit so they have that slight turn outward.

Felt Eye Triangles
For the foxes Felt Eye Triangles, you can print off the FREE template included with this pattern by following the link here. The print out includes multiple sizes to accompany each individual size of the crochet hat base.

Once you find the size you need, cut out the triangles using the dotted lines. You will then trace the template onto cream colored felt using a water-soluble marker (optional).

After tracing both triangles onto felt, cut them out and place them onto the hat. Using cream thread, sew stitches all the way around the triangles securing the felt to the base of the hat.

Using two 15mm black buttons for eyes and white thread, secure the buttons to the felt.

Please Note: Small embellishments may be a choking hazard to small children and babies, please use your best judgment with attaching small objects onto handmade projects. If you would rather not use buttons you can crochet some eyes instead.

Nose
Aline the nose in between the two triangles and towards the bottom of the hat base. Using the long tail from the nose, Sew stitches all the way around securing the nose to the hat base.

Tassels
Using black, cream and orange yarn. Cut 18 strands of yarn 28" in length (6 of each color), then separate 9 strands for EACH earflap. Fold the 9 strands in half (three of each color), and loop them around the bottom of the earflap to attach them to the bottom of the hat base. Splitting the strands into three equal parts, braid the strands all the way down and knot the bottom. Trim the remaining ends sticking out so that they're all the same length. Repeat for the other side.
